"Say Hello to My Friend Lupus"

Introduction

The journey of writing my debut non-fiction, self-help book, “Say Hello to My Friend Lupus”, was a reflective experience rooted in my battles with lupus. Here I want to share the inspiration behind my book and how my experiences have shaped its content and message.

Personal Motivation and Background

What personal experiences or challenges in your life led you to write this book?

The inspiration for my book comes from my diagnosis of lupus in 2016. Living in a small European country with limited resources in my mother tongue, I had to rely heavily on the Internet to understand and manage my illness. The online resources I found were invaluable in helping me face the daily struggles of living with lupus and reclaiming a sort of normalcy in my life. I wanted to write a book in my mother tongue, Macedonian, so other lupus warriors in my country could benefit from all the information that was available in English (Later I decided to publish the English version first).

Was there a specific moment or event that sparked the idea for your book?

I can't recall a specific moment (probably as a result of the occasional brain fog :) ), but the idea to write this book gradually formed as I navigated my health journey.

How has your health journey influenced the content and message of your book?

My health journey greatly influenced my book. Diagnosed in 2016, the first few years were incredibly challenging. The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated things, as I had to be extremely cautious due to my autoimmune condition. During the lockdown, I immersed myself in reading - a mix of books, eBooks, audiobooks, research studies, blogs, and podcasts. This wealth of knowledge led me to implement small lifestyle changes that significantly improved my lupus symptoms, eventually allowing me to stop my medications.

My experience with the COVID-19 vaccine also emphasized the importance of making informed health decisions. After so much research and consultations with medical professionals, I took the Pfizer vaccine without any lupus flare-ups, which encouraged me to cautiously re-enter the world, always wearing my stylish masks.

Professional Background

What aspects of your professional background or expertise made you feel compelled to write a self-help health book?

With over a decade of experience in translation, publishing, and editing, I have developed a strong understanding of language and communication. This background equipped me with the skills to write a book that is both informative and accessible.

Are there any pivotal moments in your career that contributed to your decision to write this book?

At the end of 2022, I left my job after nearly 14 years, using the time to focus on my health and return to my studies. During this period, I passed 14 exams and began brainstorming my BA thesis. It was then that I decided to write a book that could reach and support fellow lupus warriors, letting them know they are not alone.

Influences and Research

Did any particular books, authors, or experts in the health and self-help fields inspire you?

While no specific books or authors directly inspired me, I read extensively across self-help and business-related genres. Podcasts, particularly those related to indie authors and self-publishing, were also influential in my journey.

What kind of research did you conduct to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the information in your book?

I relied on reputable lupus organization websites (such as Lupus Foundation of America, Lupus Research Alliance, PubMed, medical books (like “The Lupus Encyclopedia: A Comprehensive Guide for Patients and Families” by Donald E. Thomas Jr., “The London Lupus Centre, Book of Lupus: A Patients’ Guide” by Graham Hughes,  and lupus-oriented podcasts (The Lupus Foundation of America: The Expert Series, Lupus Science and Medicine Podcast) to gather accurate and reliable information.

Are there specific studies, findings, or trends in the health industry that influenced your writing?

I emphasized self-care and listening to one's body throughout the book. While not necessarily trends, practices like mindfulness, yoga, and deep breathing exercises are highlighted as effective stress management tools.

Reader's Needs and Goals

What unmet needs or gaps in existing health literature did you aim to address with your book?

My goal was to create a comprehensive yet simple guide written in an easy-to-understand language. I wanted the book to feel like a conversation with a friend, filled with empathy and practical advice.

How did you determine what information would be most valuable and impactful for your readers?

I followed my instincts, providing the information I wished I had when I was first diagnosed and the insights I gained as I learned to live with lupus.

Goals and Vision

What are your main goals for your readers after they finish your book?

I hope readers feel empowered and equipped with the tools and knowledge to navigate their daily lives with lupus. I want them to accept lupus as a companion on their life journey.

How do you hope your book will change or improve the lives of your readers?

I want my readers to feel more optimistic and motivated. By learning and applying some of the tips and techniques I share, I hope they can lead more fulfilled lives despite the challenges of lupus.

What key message or takeaway do you want to communicate to your audience?

Having lupus is not the end! Managing lupus symptoms effectively can significantly improve one's quality of life. Accepting lupus as a friend rather than an enemy can be transformative.

Writing Process and Challenges

How did you organize and structure your thoughts and ideas before starting to write?

I reflected on my initial diagnosis and structured my thoughts around the different aspects of my life affected by lupus. For each aspect, I shared a combination of research, personal experiences, and practical advice.

Were there any specific writing techniques or strategies that helped you stay focused and motivated?

I dedicated 45-minute periods each day to writing or researching. This consistent routine helped me stay focused and motivated.

Did you face any challenges during the writing process, and how did you overcome them?

I struggled with imposter syndrome and sometimes felt overwhelmed by the amount of information. Reminding myself of my purpose - to share my journey and help others - kept me grounded and motivated.

Personal Stories and Credibility

How did sharing your own experiences enhance the credibility and relatability of your book?

By sharing my vulnerabilities and the feeling of isolation, I enhanced the book's credibility and relatability. Many lupus patients feel misunderstood, and knowing they're not alone can provide hope and relief.

Feedback and Impact

What kind of impact do you hope your book will have on the health and self-help community?

I hope my book serves as a handy guide for lupus patients, offering simple yet effective tips and techniques. My ultimate goal is to contribute to a little more happiness, strength, and motivation among fellow lupus warriors.

Final thoughts

Writing "Say Hello to My Friend Lupus" has been a labor of love and a testament to my journey with lupus. Through this book, my goal is to empower and support others facing similar challenges. I hope my readers find comfort, guidance, and inspiration within its pages.
